Pool tables are indeed precious investments by many individuals. They are not just a form of entertainment, but they also serve as family heirlooms that can be passed on to succeeding generations. And because they are expensive and costly to maintain, they have become an even more important investment to many homeowners.
This is why it is important that you learn everything that you can about pool tables before making a purchase. Read on to find out some of the important things that you need to know and understand before buying your own billiards table.
Pool tables should be made from solid wood
Some manufacturers will claim that their billiard tables are made from all wood or 100% wood. This actually means that they used composite woods in making the table. These type of woods don’t have the same quality as solid wood; thus, they are not suitable in supporting the weight of the slate. As a result, they will sag and deform over time.
Solid woods are usually Oak, Maple, Cherry, and Walnut. The other type of woods used, the composite woods, are basically veneer over Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), Russian Maple and Chinese birch or rubberwood. MDF primarily consists of sawdust glued together under pressure. To give it the appearance of solid wood, manufacturers add a very thin layer of laminated veneer. Some other manufacturers even add carved lines and color to the MDF and veneer to make it look more authentic. Thus, it could be difficult to identify whether you are buying authentic solid wood or MDF.
The easiest way to identify is to buy only tables that say they are made from solid wood and inquire specifically what kind of wood was used. If it says, “all wood” or “100% wood”, choose another manufacturer.
Billiard tables can be made in America or built in U.S.A.
There are billiard tables that are made in America and there are others that say they were built in the U.S.A. Although both are basically the same, there is quite a difference with them. Those made in America do not actually come from the U.S.A. Parts are often shipped from other countries such as Malaysia and China and then assembled somewhere here in the country.
If you are making purchase, not to mention this big of an investment, you would want to be sure you are buying locally manufactured and locally made products. Thus, it is best to inquire from which country the parts came from or have been manufactured.
Another rule of thumb to keep in mind is that if the table is sold through the Internet, it is most likely made overseas – or at least the parts came from another country. Although nothing is really bad about this, you want to be sure of the quality of each part of the product you are buying. And if the parts came from another country, you have no way to be sure of their quality.
Always remember that those manufacturers that make billiards table locally are often those that do not sell directly to consumers. They also do not sell through the Internet. You’ll find them in local billiards supply store and retail chains.
Lifetime warranty is valid only until the manufacturer is in business
When you see the phrase lifetime warranty, you want to inquire more about this before letting this persuade you into buying pool tables. This phrase is a great way to entice consumers and have been found effective by many manufacturers. That’s why it has been used in many industries.
One thing you need to know about lifetime warranties is that they are only valid until the manufacturer is in business. When they go out of business, warranty will be considered void and null. This won’t be a problem if you bought the billiard table from a legit seller in your local billiards supply store or retail chains. However, if you bought the table from an online store, chances are your lifetime warranty will only last for 1-3 years as that is the duration of how long an online store lasts in business.
Another thing to remember is that warranty doesn’t usually cover re-leveling especially if you bought from a reseller. They are not the ones who actually designed and manufacture the table so it will be difficult, if not impossible, for them to efficiently and perfectly level the table. To ensure that your table will be leveled and that you have warranty on this, buy directly from local manufacturers and have them deliver and set up the table in your house.
Sold with 100% gum rubber cushions
You must have read this several times when reading promotional ads for pool tables. If you think this actually means 100%, you need to think again. This actually means that the gum rubber was made in China and that it contains at least 25% of fillers such as clay and silica. These fillers actually decrease the lifespan of the rubber cushions to 3-5 years and it makes them easily affected by heat, cold, UV light and humidity. Thus, you will need to better take care of your billiards tables. Also, this limits you to where you want to place your table. You wouldn’t be able to place it outside because it can easily be damaged by too much sun.
And because these manufacturers are very much aware that their rubber cushions are not 100% gum and that they will last only for a short period of time, they often do not include this in their warranty. So if you see in the ad that it says it has 100% gum rubber cushions but it’s not included in the warranty, you might want to move on to the next manufacturer.
